Census areas (or census tracts) are geographical designations used for collecting census data and reporting demographic data. In many cases, census areas follow existing city and town boundaries. There are many populated areas, however, that are not formally recognized as cities or towns. These unincorporated places are usually governed at the county level, often with local input.
